“An independent foreign policy is not defined by just shifting alliances because that’s what we merely did. We recalibrated our foreign policy to a pro-China, anti-west foreign orientation. But that doesn’t make it independent,” pangangatuwiran ng lider ng ‘Magnificent 7’ na si Ifugao Rep. Teddy Baguilat.
“President Duterte has befriended China and Russia which is not a bad thing…and to me, his criticism of American imperialism in the PH has a grain of truth. But in this community of nations, it is not wise to make new friends by destroying old friendships and making enemies of good friends (European Union). No, I don’t think we are strengthening our independence and freedoms by kowtowing to Chinese interests,” pagpupunto ni Baguilat.
“Speaker Alvarez statement that it is only under Duterte’s term that the country became truly independent from colonizers is historical revisionism and pooh poohs the struggle of the country’s heroes who fought against Spain, US and Japanese colonizers for our hard won freedoms since the 1898 Philippine revolution,” komento ni Villarin.
“I also don’t understand the need to drumbeat the foreign policy of the two-year old Duterte government when it has been a failure in terms of asserting our sovereignty from Chinese aggression in the West Philippine Sea. Even an unscheduled landing of a Chinese military aircraft in Davao is blatant violation of our airspace that was not called out by Speaker Alvarez. This invasion by China is an affront to our sovereignty but Speaker Alvarez seems not to mind this naked aggression. Is the foreign policy now jumping from the frying pan into the fire?” ayon pa kay Villarin.
