“The barangay is the most basic and most important unit in our political system. Let’s reward and recognize our barangay leaders nationwide for their daily hard work through assured benefits provided by law,” ani Pimentel sabay diin na may anim na benepisyong makukuha ang mga barangay sa kanyang Senate Bill 2148 o ang Magna Carta for Barangays.

“If implemented, it would be game changers in the field of local governance,” ani Pimentel. “They’re long overdue. The legislated benefits are classifying barangay officials as regular government employees with fixed salaries, allowances, insurance and other essential and fringe benefits; regular supply of basic necessities such as public transport, barangay halls and health centers; automatic release of fund shares from national taxes; easy transfer of funds for maintenance of roads; mandatory share in taxes within its jurisdiction; and employment priority for residents in projects within the barangay.”

“DILG Secretary Eduardo Año fully supports the measure. In fact, under our bill, the department plays a big role in ensuring that these benefits are fully implemented,” dagdag ni Pimentel.
