China pinaporma ng DFA sa Benham Rise

Ibinunyag ni Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano na may natanggap itong impormasyon na inaprubahan diumano ng Department of Fo­reign Affairs (DFA)ang request ng Institute of Oceanology of Chinese Academy of Sciences (IO-CAS) para sa Marine Scientific Research (MSR) sa karagatang sakop ng Pilipinas.

Katuwang ng China sa research ay ang University of the Phi­lippines–Marine Science­ Institute (UP-MSI). 
Sakop ng proyekto ang Eastern Luzon kung saan matatagpuan ang Benham Rise gayundin ang Eastern Mindanao.

Nagpahayag ng pagkabahala ang Magdalo solon sa MSR na ipinagkaloob sa China.

“We should be careful and prudent in granting any access to our waters especially with China who is known to claim 80 percent of our EEZ (exclusive economic zone) in South China Sea through its expansive 9-dash line,” giit ni Alejano. 

“China has been adamant on exploring Benham Rise and they have no intention of involving Filipino scien­tists. It seems that China was only forced to collaborate with UP-MIS for the sake of getting the permit. Given this initial behavior, we should be worried on whether the Philippines will be given equal access to all information culled by the joint project,” dagdag nito.

Noong administrasyong Ramos, pinayagan ng gobyerno ang joint exploration ng Pilipinas at China sa South China Sea na sinasabing naging daan para tuluyang okupahan ng China ang nasabing teritoryo dahil sa mga nakitang langis doon.
