Ang hatha yoga ay overarching umbrella ng yoga na sumasaklaw sa mara­ming klase ng traditional yoga.

Ang term na “Hatha”, in Sanskrit means “Ha” = sun and “tha” = moon which emphasizes on balancing these two energies. It can also mean “force” and just like in every yoga class, breath is life force. Of course, mayroon itong yoga poses and breath work just like any yoga class that aims to help bring peace to the mind and body upang ihanda ang katawan for deeper spiritual practice tulad ng meditation.

Ang Classical Hatha yoga ay na-develop noong 15th century which included guidance for the proper setting of yoga, asanas or poses, pranayama or breathing exercises, mudras or hand gestures, at meditation for personal spiritual growth. Noong 1983, dinala ni Swami Vivekananda sa America ang hatha yoga as a spiritual practice.

Pagdating naman ng 1920s, pinagsama na ng mga yogis ang asanas with other popular exercises to create a flowing style of yoga that was more physical than spiritual. 1950s naman na-introduce ang hatha yoga to millions of households across America with Richard Hittleman’s popu­lar TV program “Yoga For Health”.

Ilang taon ang nagdaan ay dinala ni Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the spiritual advisor to The Beatles, ang yoga to a new dimension by going mainstream with a combination of transcendental meditation and yoga. Simula noon ay sumikat ang yoga.

Hatha yoga class is a relatively gentle, slow and great for beginners or para sa mga may gusto sa more relaxed style na kung saan ay mas matagal ang pag-hold ng poses. Expect to have an introduction to basic yoga poses at hindi ka masyadong pagpapawisan in a hatha yoga class, but you should end up leaving class feeling longer, looser, and more relaxed.

Hatha classes will help you to stretch, unwind, and release tension, providing a good counterpoint to both busy lifestyles and cardio workouts. Hatha yoga classes veer away from the rigorous breath-to-movement flows more commonly practiced sa Vinyasa and Ashtanga yoga. Ang focus ay ang flowing breath in static postures to stay in the po­ses longer. This style helps you focus on alignment and mindful breathing, kaya naman the practice is accessible to yogis of all levels, especially beginners.

At kung sakali namang nababagalan at nabitin ka sa hatha class, don’t give up on yoga completely. There are faster-paced, more athle­tic ways to do yoga. Subu­kan ang ibang types of yoga tulad ng flow or vinyasa, o ‘di naman kaya po­wer yoga, and ashtanga, rocket o inside flow at tingnan kung ano ang mas trip mo.
